Stay in Montpellier and Lille

On Friday I went to the Britisnîmes Book Club at one of the members' house near Anduze. We were discussing "Tinkers" by Paul Harding. We then had lunch. It was nice to be in an English speaking environnement ! I then joined the French-English language group at Le Bookshop in Montpellier. In the evening I dined out with my friend C. from L. We had quite a bit to catch up on...
On Saturday I went to Nîmes where I had lunch. I didn't manage to see G. I suspect she's away. In the evening back in Montpellier I was going to D. & JM's. They had organised a stories & songs evening. We were 6 and everybody had to bring a plate and a story or a song. I brought an apple crumble and "La Parisienne" from Marie-Paule Belle. Every story and song was quite different and it was a lovely evening.
On Sunday I caught a T.G.V. for Lille . I dined out (I know ! Again !) with C's boy-friend C.A. It has been a very pleasant evening too. Photos to follow shortly...

On Tuesday I went to St Benoit s/ Loire to have lunch with my family friend E. from Briare Le Canal. E.'s parents knew my grand parents on my mother side very well so somehow he's part of the family memory. I then went to Briare itself for a "pelgrimage" : the church where are some of my grand father's sculptures, the cemetary and the "Pont Canal" (see 3/8/10 entry).
On Wednesday I met up with my friends B & B. We had lunch at "Le Lièvre Gourmand". It used to be in Sologne and the chef is from Australia. It's really really really a nice restaurant with inventive food. In the afternoon I visited Mme R. who I've known for nearly 30 years and is now in her late 90's. She lives on her own with her dog and she is amazingly "with it".

It has been nice for once to take time to travel round the "Orléannais" and see friends.

On Sunday with my parents we went to visit the house of "Tante Léonie". Marcel Proust spent his holidays there as a child and it has inspired him for the 1st part of his novel "Combray". There is a guided tour which actually helps - for anybody knowing a bit of Proust's works - to figure out how close or not is the fiction from the reality. We had lunch at "Hostellerie de Guibert" near Bonneval. A very nice former "maison de Maître" and the food is quite good too. We then went back to Orléans through pretty villages.
On Monday I headed for Chaumont s/ Loire to see the 20th Garden Festival on the grounds of the castle. The theme this year was "gardens of the future and biodiversity". (see: http://www.domaine-chaumont.fr/index-en.php?page=festival-2011&scat=5a&cat=5&expandable=2). It took most of my day. I had a cup of tea in Cheverny on the way back.

I've left in Nottingham my USB key to transfer photos from the camera to the laptop... And didn't take the time yet to buy an other one. Hence I'm shitting : the previous photos are from a previous trip but related to yesterday's... Sorry folks ! I'll catch up later.
Anyway. In the end T. didn't come with me but we still see each other. The weather is much better today that previously forecast so I might as well get off now for St Benoit s/ Loire via Germigny des Près.
Talk to you later.
